About Me: Dr. Avanish Kumar brings sharp expertise and fresh energy to the role of Assistant Professor in the Department of Fuel, Minerals & Metallurgical Engineering at IIT(ISM) Dhanbad. His research passion lies in the mechanical behavior of metals, structural integrity, the creation of high-strength and damage-tolerant steels, and the complex challenge of hydrogen embrittlement. A proud alumnus of Annamalai University (BE, Mechanical Engineering (Manufacturing), 2013), he went on to earn an MTech in Materials Science & Engineering from IIT Bhubaneswar (2015). During his MTech research work at CSIR-IMMT Bhubaneswar, he developed Cu-Mo alloy anodes for high-power microwave devices—resulting in two research articles and one conference paper. After a year as an Ad-hoc Faculty member in the Department of Metallurgical & Materials Engineering at NIT Warangal, he completed his PhD in Metallurgical Engineering & Materials Science at IIT Bombay in 2021. There, he engineered bulk nanostructured steels that marry remarkable strength with damage tolerance—all achieved through refined heat-treatment control. Today, Dr. Kumar’s portfolio includes 15 journal articles (10 in Q1, 4 in Q2, 1 in Q3), five conference proceedings, one granted patent, and over 400 citations. Prof. Kumar leads the dynamic Steel Technology Laboratory — a vibrant research hub comprising one post-doctoral fellow, one project JRF, four PhD scholars, two MTech students, and three BTech students.
