Undergraduate Programme: B.Tech. in Petroleum Engineering

1. About the Programme

The Department of Petroleum Engineering at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad was established in 1957. The undergraduate programme in Petroleum Engineering includes theoretical instruction, laboratory experiments, computational tools and practical exposure to petroleum industry and its operations. The programme is designed to develop knowledge and technical skills in key areas of petroleum engineering, including drilling, reservoir engineering, production engineering, formation evaluation, enhanced oil recovery and reservoir modelling and simulation. It also incorporates emerging areas such as unconventional hydrocarbon resources, carbon capture, utilisation and sequestration (CCUS), geothermal engineering and the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in petroleum engineering.

4. Industrial Training, Internships and Field Exposure

Practical exposure is an important component of petroleum engineering education. The department helps in providing industry training, internships, field visits and hands-on project work to help students understand real-world petroleum engineering operations.
Students should refer to the current academic requirements for the applicable schedule.

5. Student Chapters and Professional Activities

Students have opportunities to participate in professional societies, technical events, competitions and other activities related to the energy industry.
Student chapters and professional activities include:

Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE)
Federation of Indian Petroleum Industry (FIPI)
International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC)

These activities provide opportunities for technical learning, professional networking, knowledge sharing and engagement with current developments in the petroleum and energy sectors.

6. Career Opportunities and Industry Engagement

Graduates in Petroleum Engineering can pursue opportunities in oil and gas exploration and production, drilling and well engineering, reservoir management, production operations, energy consulting, simulation, and related technology and energy sectors.
The department's placement features core companies including ONGC, ONGC Videsh, Oil India Limited, BPRL, BP, SLB, Cairn, ExxonMobil, Chevron, Halliburton, Baker Hughes, Reliance Industries, Nayara Energy, Sun Petrochemicals, Essar and Rystad Energy, and other non-core companies.
