Electrical Engineering Department at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad has extensive national and international research links. Its continuing aim is to provide a vibrant, highly stimulating environment for conducting selected research carefully in topical areas that are of the highest international standard, thereby, attracting the best Ph.D. students.

Research environment and Culture

The Department is active in using its research base to actively promote wider economic benefits across the region and beyond that are aligned with sustainable development goals and societal and economic grand challenges. For this purpose, Electrical Engineering Department has chosen to focus research activities on following thematic areas:

• Advanced Power Systems: This program offers a cutting-edge research environment focused on the development of sustainable, smart, and secure electric power infrastructure. As the energy sector undergoes a major transformation driven by renewable integration, decentralization, digitalization, and electric mobility, this program prepares the scholars to become innovators and leaders in the power industry and academia. The dedicated research team works on the cutting edge arenas like smart grid technologies, renewable energy grid integration, energy storage systems and grid support, power system stability and control, wide area monitoring and protection, demand response and energy management, real-time simulation and optimization, microgrids and distributed energy systems, etc.
• Advanced Power Electronics and Electrical Drives: This program is designed for the scholars passionate about pushing the boundaries of power conversion, smart grids, renewable energy systems, and next-generation power devices. The program provides a strong foundation in theoretical concepts, simulation tools, and hands-on experimentation to develop high-impact research and innovative solutions for modern energy challenges. The research highly motivated team works on wide band gap (WBG) devices (SiC, GaN), high-frequency power conversion, smart inverter systems, battery management systems, electric vehicle chargers, wireless power transfer, renewable energy integration, grid-tied and off-grid power systems, EMI/EMC in power electronics, etc.
• Autonomous Systems, Robotics and Nonlinear Control: Autonomous vehicles will soon be on our streets, self-driving trucks will be transporting products and autonomous heavy equipment will be used in the construction industry. Autonomous ships will be navigating our oceans and UAVs will be present in our skies delivering goods, monitoring our landscape, collecting data and assisting in communications.  The research team works on the development of nonlinear control techniques, intelligent control, estimation and path-planning algorithms that will enable the deployment of safe and resilient driverless vehicles on land, at sea and in the air. The Department works on the standard research that is recognized in highly quality publications, as a result students get good opportunities at recognized world institutes.
