About The Department

The Department of Applied Geology, established in 1926, the year of inception of the Indian School of Mines, is the pioneering centre of teaching, training and advanced research in Applied Geology. The Department offers 5-year Integrated M.Tech (Applied Geology), 3-year M.Sc. Tech (Applied Geology), and Ph.D. programmes in diverse field of Geology. Besides, the department organises conferences, seminars and workshops and provides training programmes, consultancy and testing services, both at international and national levels. The department has developed a very strong Industry-Academia relationship which is unique in the country. The department consists of a team of highly talented faculty members and technical staff who contribute to the development of the young minds. The fundamental objective of this department is to educate young professionals for careers in diverse fields of Applied Geology, Critical Minerals, Sustainable Resources, Petroleum, Mining and Mineral Sciences.

The principal long-range goal of the department is to establish itself as a centre of excellence in Applied Geology with special reference to Mineral Exploration (Critical metal), Engineering Geology, Coal Geology, Hydrogeology and Petroleum Geology. Since its inception, this department has focused on this specialized purpose, and continues to do so. It imparts training to students not only from all over India and, but also from abroad. The department is home to an excellent treasure trove Geological Museum, one of the oldest and richest in the country in terms of its collections, exhibits, models and displays. The trained graduates of Applied Geology, by virtue of their high professional ability and skill, have always been at the forefront of the nation’s oil and mineral development and exploration programmes, while several others have carried the name and fame of the institution far beyond the frontiers of the nation, even to the well-developed foreign countries.

Students of this department are sent to renowned oil and mineral sector organizations for summer training. In addition to recruitment through the all-India competitive Geologists’ Competitive Examination, conducted be the UPSC, ONGC, and other public sector organizations, graduates of this department are currently securing jobs through campus placement. They are being hired more quickly and offered high salaries. In the current session and in the recent past, students from this department have been recruited by various organizations, including  Aditya Birla Group, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, ESSAR MINMET, Essar Oil and Gas EnP, ExxonMobil Services & Technology Private Limited, Future First, Gas Authority of India Ltd., Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation Ltd., Greenko, Halliburton, International Marketing Corporation Pvt. Ltd., Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Jindal South West, Kalinga Commercial Corporation Limited, Mecon, Merilytics, Mining Technical Consultancy Services, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Rystad Energy, Steel Authority of India Ltd., Selan Exploration Technology Limited, Sprinklr, Sun Petro chemicals Pvt Ltd., Tata Steel Ltd., Vedanta Cairn Oil & Gas, Vedanta HZL, Vedanta Ltd., Coal India Ltd., Essar Oil Ltd., Hindustan Oil Exploration Company, National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation (GSPC), Oil India Ltd., Tata Consultancy Services and Hindustan Aluminium Company (Hindalco), among others, through campus interviews.

The Department of Applied Geology takes pride in nurturing graduates who, through their professional expertise and skills, continue to play a vital role in the nation’s oil, gas, and mineral exploration and development programmes. Many of our alumni have carried this legacy forward internationally, contributing to renowned organizations and research institutions across the globe, bringing recognition and pride to our department and institution.

Our students benefit from a rich blend of rigorous academic training and hands-on experience. Through summer internships and fieldwork with reputed oil and mineral sector organizations, they gain practical exposure that sharpens their skills and prepares them for real-world challenges, like critical metal exploration.

A key strength of the department lies in its distinguished faculties. Before joining the institute, many of our faculty members received advanced training and conducted research in leading universities and research centres across the world also many have served as professional geologist in GSI, faculties in universities and scientist from reputed CSIR labs. Their global exposure, coupled with their PhDs and postdoctoral experiences, has enriched both their teaching and research. This world-class expertise fuels high-quality instruction and inspires a research culture that pushes disciplinary boundaries.
