…standing tall since early decades of 20th century, the institute is steadily sailing through the millennium change and has emerged into one of the most prominent institution- Indian Institute of Technology IIT(ISM) with full bloom functioning of 18 branches of Engineering, Applied Sciences, Management Studies and Humanities. IIT (ISM) has had a centenary long credentials of outperforming achievements/contributions in academia and the industry.
The Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) constituted under Institute of Technology Act, 1961 is administered through IIT Council-the apex body, Government of India under the Chairmanship of Honourable Minister, MoHRD for uniform and smooth governance of Pan-IIT in our country.
Further, Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) functions under tandem administrative guidance of Board of Governors (BoG) & Finance Committee (FC) headed by Chairman and Director, IIT(ISM) as its member.
Academic administration is the domain of Senate constituted of all the Professors of IIT(ISM) and few other nominated members from reputed organizations. Director, IIT(ISM) is the ex-officio Chairman. The Senate helps in structuring the course-curriculum, research activities and all other academic activities towards creating a learning ambience in the institute and to facilitate overall academic excellence.
IIT(ISM) offers thirteen 4-years B.Tech programmes in various branches of Engineering like Chemical, Civil, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical, Electronics & Communication, Electronics & Instrumentation, Engineering Physics, Environmental Science & Engineering, Mechanical, Fuel & Mineral, Mining Machinery, Mining and Petroleum. It also offers 5- years Dual Degree (B.Tech + M.Tech) Programme in Computer Science & Engineering. Besides, it offers 5 years Integrated M.Tech Programme in Applied Geology & Applied Geophysics and Mathematics & Computing. The Institutes also offers 3-years Masters programmes viz. MSc. (Tech) in Applied Geology & Applied Geophysics, 2-years M.Sc. Programmes in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics & Computing. It offers higher degrees in Management and Humanities as well, in addition to PhD & PDF in various streams.
IIT(ISM) Dhanbad adopts a total transparent admission process ; B.Tech. through JEE (Advanced) and M. Tech. through GATE conducted at Pan-India level. Admissions to MBA programmes are done on valid CAT/ GMAT Score. However, students from foreign countries are admitted through sponsorships of the respective embassy.
The Office of the Dean (Research and Development) drives strategic planning and provide guidance across academic and research programs, fostering new and interdisciplinary research initiatives and collaborations

IIT(ISM) looks forward to Champions Trophy in the FORMULA BHARAT to be held in Coimbatore in 2019. The budding engineers of IIT(ISM) are in the process of fabricating MRX-02; the indigenous Formula Car by in-house students of Team Mechismu.
Team Mechismu is an innovative group with zealous dynamism into it functioning at IIT(ISM) Dhanbad. It works perennially working in the arena of ever evolving technology in the automobile sector. The team participates in various events organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), where students from various varsities exhibit their fabrics woven in formula style cars. It also participates in studying the market opportunities for prototype development and large scale production of fabricated Formula vehicles as well demonstrates endurance excellence and design attributes involved in the vehicle.
Driven by passion “TEAM MECHISMU” of IIT(ISM) is deep into designing of Racing Cars. The tale commences with a group dynamics of 20 undergraduate students from IIT(ISM) who set on the voyage and made a lightweight, efficient ATV named “Mechismu” in the year 2008 and participated in BAJA SAE INDIA. The team participated in all dynamic events and it has been a notable performance by team “Mechismu”.
Subsequently, the team under the guidance of Dr. N. K. Singh, Associate Professor, Deptt of Mechanical Engineering finished 2nd in BAJA SAE 2010 at Pithampur, Madhya Pradesh. In 2011, the team built a formula prototype vehicle and participated in Supra SAE India 2011. It had been a memorable experience of securing first position in the coveted auto-cross event.
This year the team aims at further reducing the weight and enhanced power to weight ratio of the vehicle lighter engine and compact body fabric.
Presently, the team comprises of 42 members in which a bigger pie belongs to Deptt. of Mechanical Engineering and are also from Environmental Engineering, Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, Engineering Physics, Mineral Engineering, Mining Machinery Engineering and Petroleum Engineering departments of IIT(ISM).
Selection process of team members
Every year, the team gets stronger by inclusion of few new members. The team currently follows a 2 tier selection procedure; a Written test and Personal Interview for the Technical Team followed by Group discussion and Personal Interview. The process is scheduled by the time freshers are settled in the institution. Currently there are around 40 members in the Team “Mechismu”.
