Dhanbad is a city in the Indian state of Jharkhand. It is the second most populated city in Jharkhand. Dhanbad along with its urban areas population ranks 42nd in population amongst other cities in India.

Dhanbad district was constituted in 1956 by carving out the old Dhanbad subdivision, Chas and Chandankiyari police stations of the Sadar subdivision of the erstwhile Manbhum district. Dhanbad is Police district since 1928. The re-organisation of the districts in the State of Bihar which took place after 1971 did not affect the district of Dhanbad. In 1991 a part of Dhanbad district was sliced away to form Bokaro district.

Dhanbad is the largest city by population and second largest urban agglomeration in Jharkhand after Jamshedpur.
Dhanbad is famous for its coal mines and industrial establishments; the city is surrounded by about 112 coal mines with a total production of 27.5 million tonnes and an annual income of 7000 million rupees through coal business. There are a number of coal washeries present there. The city is also known for its power generation plants. Hydro power is generated at Maithon and Panchet. Tata Power and Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) are setting up a 1050 MW thermal power plant at Maithon. ONGC is using CBM (Coal beded methane) for power generation at some areas.
Though managed by a municipal corporation, Dhanbad was listed the least clean of all according to the latest Swachh Sarvekshan of 73 Indian cities in 2016. Indian institute of technology(Indian School of Mines), IIT (ISM) launched Total Waste Solution, or ToWaSo, a waste management start-up.Taking note of the rising pollution in the coal city, the Municipal Corporation of Dhanbad (MCD) is planning to plant trees which can absorb toxic gases from the atmosphere.
