IIT(ISM) GEOLOGICAL MUSEUM

Geological Museum of Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad established in 1926, is a treasure trove of more than 12,000 exhibits and displays of typical and rare specimens of minerals, rocks and fossils and models of earth processes & evolution of life. Besides, the museum has an excellent collection of gemstones; in natural and polished forms.

There are collections of fossils (age-wise, phylum-wise) of both plants and animals, rocks of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic groups, and minerals (element-wise, state-wise, genesis-wise- type/group-wise).

Various physical features of rocks, namely folds, faults, joints and foliations together with different geomorphic models are also included in the exhibits. The museum has collections from the Ward’s Natural Science Establishment, Rochester, New York; Gregory Bottley, London; Dr. F. Krantz, Bonn, Germany; Hubbard Scientific Company, North Brook, Illinois, USA; Thomas Murby & Co., London; Academy of Cracow, Poland; Institute of Computer Science Academy, Republic of Czech and Badwin Lead Zinc Mines, Burma.

There are several Indian contributors as well, namely Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeobotany, Lucknow; Geological Survey of India; State Departments of Mines & Geology; Tata Steel Mines; Mosabani Copper Mines; Manganese Mines; Mica Mines, Koderma; Hindustan Zinc Ltd ; BCCL Mines; Kolar Gold field; Hindustan Minerals and Natural History Specimen Supply Company, Kolkata; P. Gupta, Artist, Sculptor, Bronze founder & Photographer, Kolkata; Munshi Ambika Charan & Sons, Geologist & Biologist, Varanasi; Cosmos Industries, Varanasi; and Bharat Educational Stores, Merrut among innumerable others.

            Many of the collections have been obtained through the prolonged efforts of the students and faculty members of the department and this deserves a special mention about the geological museum.



SCHEME OF DISPLAY

The collections of the museum are displayed in three broad sections:

Mineralogy-Economic geology-Crystallography section

Petrology-Stratigraphy-Structural Geology sectionin

Palaeontology-Geomorphology-Engineering Geologysection

A systematic code for each of the exhibits (Minerals, Rocks and Fossils etc.) and for the different showcases and display boxes has been adopted for generating a comprehensive catalogue.

RICHNESS

In the past over 90 years of its antiquity, the museum has acquired a real gigantic collection of rare and typical exhibits of rocks, minerals, fossils and other items of geologic interest through the dedicated efforts of faculty members, researchers and students of the department. At present, the museum has approximately 6000 specimens on its regular display and another 6000 exhibits as storage, preserved in its appropriate sections of the museum. Since its establishment in 1926, the museum has been catering to the needs of students and research scholars in the field of Earth sciences.It aims to attract attention of public in general and prove its utility to academicians in particular. Eminent persons and distinguished guests Faculty members, students from different universities, visitors from various organizations and from different parts of India and abroad regularly visit the museum. The museum is known for excellent collection and methodical display of its exhibitsquickly attracts attention of the visitors. The unique artefacts collected from the bowels of the earth exhibits the passage of geological time and evolution.
